TechThrive: Prioritizing Student Wellness at Texas Tech

Texas Tech University is launching TechThrive, a new initiative under its Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to enhance student well-being.

The QEP is focused on student success and is updated every 10 years for accreditation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC).TechThrive addresses mental, physical and financial wellness, responding to a national student mental health crisis where over 60% of students meet the criteria for a mental health condition.

A Holistic Approach to Student Success

Similar to past QEPs, TechThrive will focus on students, recognizing the role of wellness in student success.

“We want students to come here and feel like their well-being is important,” said Jaclyn Cravens, a QEP co-chair and committee member.

Developed with Student Input

Plans began in Spring 2022, and TechThrive was shaped by student feedback, faculty input and research. Led by Jennifer Hughes from the Office of Planning and Assessment, the initiative is based on the Eight Dimensions of Wellness, fostering a campus culture of support and empowerment.

Campus Changes & Resources

Even though the plan officially launches in Fall 2025, TechThrive is already making an impact. Some tools, like the Schmoody app, are already available to help students with mental wellness. Texas Tech University is also using Well-being Improvement Survey for Higher Education Settings (WISHES) surveys to track student needs and improve services.

Faculty & Staff Involvement

Faculty play a crucial role in student wellness. Texas Tech is working with Faculty Senate to raise awareness, train educators and integrate well-being into teaching and advising.

Measuring Success & Expanding Support

TechThrive is designed to help all students, including those at Texas Tech’s School of Veterinary Medicine and Costa Rica campus. The university will track student wellness via surveys and data on factors such as campus culture and mental health trends. This information will help Texas Tech provide extra support to students who may need it most, including first-generation students, those facing financial struggles and students with disabilities.

A Lasting Commitment to Wellness

TechThrive is more than an accreditation requirement—it’s a commitment to student success.

“This initiative elevates wellness to the highest level at Texas Tech,” said Jill Stangl, a QEP co-chair and committee member. “We care so much about student well-being that we’ve made it a core part of our accreditation process.”

With TechThrive, Texas Tech reinforces a vital message: wellness is success.
