S.B. 3127, Select Agent Program and Biosafety Improvement Act of 2008
The Center for Biodefense, Law and Public Policy is following closely the development of legislation to reauthorize the Select Agent Program. After six years of experience with the Select Agent Program, administered in the Executive Branch by CDC and APHIS/USDA, S.B. 3127 reauthorizes the Program with significant requirements to evaluate the existing administrative mechanisms for achieving the goals of biosafety and biosecurity. A House Bill has not been introduced. Dr. Victoria Sutton, Director of the Center for Biodefense, Law and Public Policy was invited to respond to S.B. 3127, and the letter of response is available here.
