Leadership Education and Development
Participants engage in group discussions and development sessions that outline the
critical elements and skills of leadership. Camp L.E.A.D. offers a variety of leadership
lessons and activities that integrate the featured speaker, other notable guest lecturers,
participants and high school counselors in active learning sessions.
A research-based leadership curriculum is designed to include a number of focused
daily exercises and activities intended to engage students in enhancing their leadership
skills, while simultaneously providing an emphasis on character development, inclusion
and civic responsibility.
Camp L.E.A.D. promotes the development of each student's leadership skills by focusing
on the following areas:
Teamwork
Team members must be willing to invest significant time, energy and discipline in their day-to-day functioning to overcome the challenges faced by individuals assigned to work together. The determinants of team performance – trust, creating clarity, building consensus, productive conflict management, commitment to shared objectives, mutual accountability and a focus on collective achievement – are all discussed during this segment.
Communication Skills
Leaders are people who draw on positive psychological capabilities and know who they are, what they think and how they behave. This segment investigates how authentic leaders are also aware of others' values, moral perspectives, knowledge, communication styles and strengths.
Influencing Skills
The importance of engaging in comfortable, unfiltered conversations about important topics is explored in this segment. The different types, causes and consequences of conflict are also discussed, along with strategies for how to manage conflict and negotiation effectively. Students learn effective listening techniques and influencing skills during this session.
Personal Wellness
Successful leaders embrace a well-rounded and healthy lifestyle, understanding that it is not only important to take care of business, but also yourself. This session will examine lifestyle choices including nutrition, exercise, stress management and controlling risk factors such as smoking, alcohol and drug use.
Self-Assessment, Awareness and Coaching
Leaders excel when they are self-aware. This segment focuses on assessments that explore the individual's managerial strengths and how to use these skills to make effective decisions. Participants learn about their personality traits, managerial styles and how each of these complement leadership. Students also learn how to recognize traits and skills in others with an emphasis on how to lead others to attain maximum performance.
