Getting the Word Out

From conveying significant university updates aligned with our strategic priorities to facilitating expert pitches and managing media inquiries, Texas Tech University is full of stories we can't wait to tell. This section provides a comprehensive overview of protocols and support services available to faculty and staff. It also includes information for media interested in telling some of our stories.

For Faculty & Staff

According to OP 68.01, all Texas Tech colleges, schools, departments and units that wish to distribute a news release or media advisory must do so through Marketing & Communications.

News Releases

News releases are reserved for items deemed significant about the university and in alignment with Texas Tech's strategic priorities. They should be of interest to a general audience. To maximize the impact of each release, Marketing & Communications may combine releases with common themes.

Media Advisories

Media advisories are reserved for events that the media and/or the public should be aware of or are invited to attend. They should include only who/what/when/where/event information and appropriate contact information.

Expert Pitches

Marketing & Communications works with faculty and staff on campus who can speak as experts on a variety of subjects. Texas Tech will send out expert pitches to the media to inform them of the availability of our experts.

Media Inquiries

All faculty and staff who receive a direct inquiry for comment or an interview from the media should reach out to Marketing & Communications before providing any information or answering questions.

Only university administration may communicate with the media on subjects that represent or appear to represent the official position of Texas Tech. Marketing & Communications will distribute official statements to the media on subjects related to the university's official position when appropriate.

For the Media

Media Inquiries

All inquiries from the media should be made through Marketing & Communications. Reporters may film in public, outdoor spaces on the Texas Tech campus but should not enter campus buildings without permission and accompanying communications staff.

Student Media

Filming on the Texas Tech campus is permitted for student media and those involved in academic or other sponsored programs that may require filming to receive course credit. Students seeking to interview a faculty or staff member should contact Marketing & Communications.

Parking

Media conducting interviews or filming/photography on campus should check in at a campus entry station.

On the weekends, most on-campus parking lots are open to the public except during designated athletic events or other events occurring on campus. Media parking on campus for athletic events should arrange that through the Athletics office.

Open Records Requests

Media wishing to file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request for information may email their request to publicinfo@ttu.edu.

Crisis Communications

In the event of an emergency on the Texas Tech campus, media access to campus may be limited to certain areas. Marketing & Communications is responsible for communicating to the media when and where media can stage during emergencies and will update media from there.

Only statements distributed by Marketing & Communications are considered official university statements. TechAlert is used to provide students, faculty and staff the latest information during a campus emergency.
